Why Is Pork Forbidden In Islam?

The consumption of pork (pig meat) has been forbidden for Muslims in no less than four places in the Quran. 'Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah.' [5:3] For Muslims, this is enough of a reason to avoid eating pork. However, others may question the wisdom behind this prohibition, which can be explained in a few points:

1- Pigs are unclean animals: they live in environments of mud, dirt, and faeces, and often ingest their own excretion and other filth. Islam is a religion that places great emphasis on purity and cleanliness, hence making pigs impure for human consumption.
2- Pork consumption has been known to cause no less than seventy diseases, namely the growing of roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms that can harbour in the intestine for a long time and spread to other organs in the case of its eggs entering the bloodstream. This can cause memory loss upon entering the brain and induce heart attacks on entering the heart. Other health risks associated with pig consumption include:

 - Pork liver being the highest food-based transmitter of Hepatitis E (a virus that affects 20 million people)
- Multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that involves the central nervous system
- Increased chances of liver cancer and Cirrhosis
