The topic of LGBTQ in the modern era has become very sensitive and oft-discussed, and the modern liberal view dominates the perspective of most of the world. It is important to discuss and understand Islamic guidelines about this topic, surrendering to the reality that Allah knows best about what is best for humanity and society, and that our perspectives are biased and limited whilst His sight is unlimited, unbiased and all-encompassing.
The following guidelines are derived from Qur'an and sunnah about same sex attractions and about transgenderism:
- It is forbidden for anyone to enjoy intimacy beyond the bounds of marriage, which can only be between a man and a woman. Any sexual contact beyond that is impermissible and considered zina. This also applies to same sex relationships.
- While same-sex sexual intimacy is forbidden, it is understood that sexual attraction and desire often exists beyond our control. There is no sin in experiencing same sex attractions as long as they are not glorified or acted upon.
- Someone who experiences this attraction and tries their best to refrain from indulging in it is deserving of great rewards for choosing taqwa of Allah above his desires.
- Those who claim that same sex attractions are not forbidden in Islam are in danger of falling into kufr for permitting what Allah has forbidden.
- As for transgenderism, imitating the opposite gender deliberately and cross dressing are forbidden. Gender reassignment surgery is not permitted. Allah has created male and female, and this is the order of nature.
- Gender dysphoria is a genuine struggle for some people and their test is to understand and remain within Allah's boundaries despite their feelings and desires. However, while they shouldn't deliberately imitate the opposite gender, they do not have to adhere to rigid cultural stereotypes and there should be greater flexibility in society regarding gender and gender roles. Empathy and understanding from the broader community is called for, while at the same time holding boundaries and not permitting this dysphoria to dictate how everyone else behaves.
- Intersex people (individuals with both male and female organs) exist but they represent a pathology of normal gender development rather than a third gender. There is a welcome space for them within the Islamic society and comprehensive rulings exist on how to classify them into one or the other gender. Surgery is permitted for them.
